Lord Armstrong of Ilminster GCB CVO

Civil Servant and Life Peer

Robert Temple Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Ilminster (OD 1940), was born in Headington, Oxford. He was educated at the Dragon from 1935 to 1940, at Eton, where he was a King’s scholar, and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied classics and philosophy. He was a British civil servant and life peer.

Lord Armstrong went on to have a long civil service career working in both the HM Treasury and the Home Office. He was knighted in 1978 and, between 1979 and 1987, he served as Cabinet Secretary under Margaret Thatcher. His full title is The Lord Armstrong of Ilminster GCB CVO.
